Patrol brought in all 8 flags for the Hillah and Al Kader Potentate Ball. It’s not too often that we get 8 Patrol members to bring in flags. It was a fun night for all that were in attendance.

We had our first Patrol meeting after our meeting time change. Our Patrol meeting was not held in our usual meeting room as it looked like a forest of chairs. Desert Patrol meeting room was being painted and our meeting room was being used as storage for their chairs. The pot luck went well though.

We discussed the upcoming 2017 parade schedule and picked 10 parades that Patrol will be attending for parade season. We might have surprise for our people hauler trailer, keep an eye out a new “person” in the trailer.

We voted a new recipient of a Life Membership in our Patrol Unit. For all his work in the past we made Floyd Rewey a Life Member of Al Kader Patrol. Floyd is well deserving of the Life Membership.

Donkey Basketball was discussed again and we might have to look for another venue for the game. It seems that Clackamas County Fair Grounds will not be available to the Shriner’s in the future. Only time will tell about the outcome.

Our Patrol has changed their meeting time for their first Monday of the month meetings. It was brought up at Monday March 6th meeting that we will now have our potluck at 6 with our business meeting to follow. The reason for the change was for health reasons of our older members.

IS Greg Jenkins, our new Patrol Captain, gave a report on the recent PSNA meeting at Al Kader Shrine in Wilsonville. The Imperial Nobles in attendance were impressed with the Flag March by members of Al Kader Patrol. They were also impressed with our Shrine facility. We brought in all 8 flags representing all Shrines around the World. It was very impressive. I was sorry that I could not be in attendance as my Shrine Lady Marsha was having back surgery that day. I want thank you all for all the Facebook posts wishing her a speedy recovery.

We talked about the upcoming Parade year and we are waiting for a final Parade schedule. We are all ready for the first Parade April 22nd in The Dalles. There was a discussion of a Silent Messenger blow up figure for our People Hauler trailer. More info on this in the future Oasis articles.

I.S. Greg and new Patrol Captain, has a full crew for the upcoming Winter PNSA meeting February 16-18 hosted Al Kader Shriner’s. Hopefully the Patrol can make a good showing. The Winter PNSA meeting has not been hosted by Al Kader for years.

Captain Greg is changing some of ways Patrol does things and it should make things flow better for the Patrol than in the past. We have the list of upcoming parades for the 2017 season. Our first parade will be The Dalles in April.

I will be doing the newsletter as Greg has a lot on his plate this year.

The Patrol helped out again at the ABATE Toy Run for the Portland Hospital. Coffee, hot chocolate, spiced cider and cookies were handed out to the riders that made the journey with toys to the hospital. Captain Lou Westwick, Past Captains Bill Harris and Gary Garde and 2nd LT Dennis Harris were in attendance. The Patrol does this event every year and the Nobels have fun doing it. There did not seem to be as many bikes this year but then again that could be a Portland City issue, not ABATE.

The first Monday of the month was our annual Patrol elections. The Patrol Officers for the 2017 year is Patrol Captain IS Greg Jenkins, 1st LT Dennis Harris, 2nd LT Rich Schoonover, Treasurer PC Rich Blizzard and Sec Bill Blankinship. I am sure these Nobles will take the Patrol onward living up to the oldest Unit at Al Kader Shrine. Our Installation Dinner will be on January 22, 2017 at the Stockpot Broiler in Beaverton.

It has a been a fun journey the past 2 years being the Captain of one of the oldest Units in Al Kader Shriners. We are only a small group compared to some of photos on the wall in the Patrol meeting room. It was a learning curve for me being a new Noble. Along the way I help from a Past Captain by Floyd Rewey who took me under his wing and got me back “on track.” I hope I made more lasting friends while trying to the best I could.

There are some changes coming up that I think will make the Patrol “People Mover” a more signature float in the future parades in 2017.

The Patrol has been busy since my last article. We were at the St. Helen’s and Tillamook parades. I as Captain was asked to bring in the American Flag at the Military social which I really enjoyed. I might bring some members of my American Legion Post in Canby with me next year as the social is open to all Veterans. We had our Patrol fund raiser again this year for the second time, the donkey basketball game at Clakamas County Fair grounds in Canby.

This event is always fun watching the “cowboys” try to ride donkeys and shoot a basketball. One of the things we enjoy is at the half time when the kids get to come into field to pet the donkeys. I am working having the teams of the Canby Fire Department against Canby PD next year at our third annual event. This would be a fun match to watch for all. I have a photo taken by Past IS Greg Jenkins that shows 2 prospective Nobles with rather large ears, I don’t have their names yet.

Well it is parade season again and Patrol is looking forward to the upcoming year. Past IS Greg Jenkins who is also Patrol 1st Lieutenant, has our jeeps in running order for the year so we will not need battery jumping to get them of our trailer. We now have all 8 Shrine country flags in our collection. The Newport parade was a little windy but we all got through it to the end, even though I had some tired marchers. We brought flags in for the Potentates Ball and the May Stated meeting. We are hoping that some of the new Ceremonial Shriners come to our meeting so they can share in one of our Pot Lucks.

Patrol had their annual Installation of the 2016 officers January 17, 2016. There was over 40 Patrol Nobles and their Shrine Ladies in attendance plus the widows of past Patrol Nobel’s. Chief Rabban Ron Gamble 2016 was the Master of Ceremonies and did a fine job of running the evenings dinner and ceremonies. The five principal Patrol Officers that were installed by this year’s new Potentate I.S. John Nerski were Nobel Lou Westwick Captain, I.S. Greg Jenkins 1st Lieutenant, Nobel Dennis Harris 2nd Lieutenant and Unit Head, Bill Blankinship Secretary and Past Captain Rich Blizzard Treasure.

A fine meal served by the Stockpot restaurant was enjoyed by all in attendance. Nobel Bill Blankinship was presented with the Patrolmen of the Year award as the most deserving Nobel of Patrol during the year by Captain Lou Westwick.

At our first meeting in February we discussed which parades we would be attending on the Unit list of recommended parades. We will be finalizing the list at our March meeting giving the list to Dennis Harris the Unit Director and our 2nd Lieutenant.

We will be having another donkey basketball game this year also. This will be again at the Clackamas County Fair - more info will be in the Oasis.

December 2015

The Patrol has been very busy in the last few months. We will be having our elections the first Monday in December. We have a slate of officers that have been nominated for all the positions. This does not mean that we cannot take nominations from the floor. So if you have a problem with ANY present officer come and vote and voice your opinion. We will be doing the ABATE Toy Run again at the Shrine Hospital. Hopefully we have a good turn out for the children.

The Captain has been busy also; I have a Position of American Legion Post Adjutant at the Post in Canby. There are some that say I should resign my position with the Legion. I have been a member for 26 years and like helping Veterans and the programs that help them and their families. I know it has been hard for me wearing 2 “hats” but I am trying my best. Some think that I should resign my position with the Legion; I will see what waits in future.

Noble Lou Westwick, Captain
July 2015

The Patrol has been busy this year and their Captain has also been busy with another “hat” he wears. I am adjutant at Canby American Legion Post 122. I have been amiss in reporting what the Patrol has been up to. Hopefully this will bring the Temple up-to-date on what we have been doing.

The Patrol brought the flags in for the Potentates Ball which was quite a gala event. We have also been busy with the first two parades of the season in The Dalles and Newport respectively. We didn’t have as many flag bearers with some members enjoying retirement cruises and some enjoying being with family events. Hopefully we can get some new members from the recent ceremonial at the Shrine center.

Past IS Greg Jenkins has been hard at work bringing the 1942 and 1947 Jeep’s in good working order. Brakes have been a problem and he thinks that will be fixed before the next parade. Parts are another thing with vehicles this old. Now one of our problems is the water pump on the ‘47.

Al Kader Patrol was asked again to help with this year’s ABATE Toy run for the Portland Shriners Hospital. Five Nobles and some Shrine Ladies helped hand out coffee, hot drinks and cookies to the riders who made to the Hospital with toys.

I said made it to the hospital because the riders where limited to only 150 motorcycles this year. In the past years there could be anywhere up to 800 or more bikers. This year because of the Police, ODOT, PDOT and the Portland Special Events Office the riders to Hospital were limited.

For more info on this year’s run go to: 2014 Abate ToyRun Info

Because of the cold weather in 2013 the Hospital is running out of toys for the children. If you can donate a toy to the Hospital, it would be greatly appreciated. I have been a part of the Toy Run for 4 years now and every year has been fun. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Patrol Nobles and their Shrine Ladies.

Patrol had their annual picnic at the Reeder Beach RV Park on Sauvies Island. The Reeder family has been connected with Al Kader Temple for years. The Park is on their Century Farm property. Our BBQ was excellent, as always, our newest Patrol member Dennis Harris was head chef with help from Dana Tawney and Bill Blankinship. Our Shrine Ladies had their usual get together and fellowship the order of the day. Bob and Susan Keller were our bartenders with their famous Gin Fizzes for liquid refreshments. The potluck went with the usual dishes and desserts. We could not have had better weather even though Jim Reeder lets us use the covered area at the park. We had a short Patrol meeting to do some business and then we enjoyed some more fellowship and called it a day.
