Motor Escort

If you are an Al Kader Shriner or a Master Mason who has thought of becoming a Shriner, like riding motorcycles and your license is motorcycle-endorsed, whether you own a bike right now or not, the Motor Escort unit is for you. We lead the Al Kader Shrine contingency in all of the parades in which Al Kader participates, and perform other escort duties as requested by the potentate. We are also the main sponsors of the Christmas for Kids function at the Al Kader Shrine Center and highly value our family and our Shrine kids.

5th Annual Shriners Run for a Child

Our first parade is under our belt, and all was great fun. After meeting at the Buckhorn Family Restaurant in Troutdale, we had a great ride to the parade. As usual the parade in The Dalles was a learning experience, as it was our first outing of the season. The weather was cool and dry for the parade, but not so good for the return trip. The heavy rain we encountered on the ride back caused us a few problems. After hitting a couple of inches of water across the road, things got a little more exciting than is usually appreciated. The water shorted out I.S. John Nerski’s siren causing it to lock on. We had a number of cars pull over before it could be corrected. Then following a lunch stop, MWB Rich Martin had some trouble getting started again, he said something about “running on fumes.” Our unit is looking forward to some upcoming trouble-free events. We will be moving the date for the June meeting due to a conflict with Oregon Grand Lodge.

The Motor Escort Unit has been working on their parade bikes and looking forward to the upcoming parade schedule. In the meantime, we have been involved with an American Doll Program with the Shriners Hospital for Children. This program is important to children who have had amputation surgery at the Shrine Hospital. This was very apparent in the first video our Motor Escort watched of a doll presentation. The images of the child receiving the doll were very moving. She began joyfully crying and said, “It’s just like me!” This is because the dolls all have the same coloring and prosthetic device that matches the child. We presented our first doll March 23rd and were very excited with the results. Many members of the unit were able to be there and participate in this first event of the program.

I.S’s Nobels and ladies. Here we are in June. I.S. and Captain Tom Bland steeped down from his position as Captain of the Motor due to health , we all wish him a speedy recovery on his knee replacement and his leadership will be missed. I was elected to fill this position for the remainder of the year.

We returned from our Cruise to Alaska and had a great time.

June is a busy month for parades and hope to see everyone at them. Newport parade was well attended and all had a amazing time the public shows up in groves. On the Cruise we meet a parent and grand parent of a shrine kid , and these inter action reinforce why we make the commitment to the hospital. If you have these interaction with current or past patient please share them with other Nobels we all like to hear them.

We had our first meeting on Thursday Jan 7th. The unit discussed the 2016 parade schedule and agreed to participate in as many parades as possible, splitting up for multiple parade days. I need to have each member to e-mail me theVIN number and license number of the unit bike they have as soon as possible so we can get the insurance paperwork in on time. We are also planning some drill practice as soon as weather permits and are going to set up some fun rides on our private bikes. I encourage each of you to come out and participate in our activities this year, let’s have some fun. IS John presented the unit with a check for $1500. For our participation last year. We are also planning a donkey basketball game this year as a fund raiser for this year. Noble Dennis is working on a venue for thus event and as soon as we get the info we will pass it on. We are also working on setting up an area it the garage to work on the bikes and will set up a schedule to get this accomplished. We will also have a storage area on the mezzanine for bike parts. This will take everyone’s help to get this set up. Our next meeting will be on Feb 5th. I hope you can make this meeting.

Nice Job on the ABATE Run to the hospital. We had nine bikes with everyone in rain gear. We escorted about 250 bikers who braved the rain. I was there to meet you but next year I plan on riding with you again.

The Officers were installed Thursday Dec 3rd at the Rheinlander restaurant where we had a great dinner.

Our next meeting is the first Thursday in January and I would like to see all of our members attend this meeting so we can plan this years training schedule and set up some fun rides on our personal bikes. We also want to set up a maintenance schedule for the bikes that need work.

We are working on the Donkey basketball game. The tentative date is April 7th but we will have more information at the meeting. We have Dennis to thank for setting this up, should be a good fund raiser.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and am expecting an active and fun year.

The end of the year is near, Motor Escort has been very busy this year and we are very proud of our participation in Shrine Center functions. The cobra tickets sales have been great, the Chief Rabban, a member of Motor Escort, went to Pendleton and had great ticket sales of $5400.00. Food caravan is a fun event that we all look forward to every year and this one is no different. We have Veteran’s day parade in Albany coming up and it always a good time to show our troops we care about them and the ones that went before them. Remember, the only reason we have what we do have it because of the sacrifice of our troops. If it wasn’t for our men and women in the Armed Services of the United State this war and many others would be fought here and not in other countries. Freedom exists in the world because of the United States of America.

The next event will be the A.B.A.T.E. run the first Saturday in December, which is an event to raise money for the hospital and take toys to the patients. You do not have to be a motorcycle rider to join in on this, you can bring donations of toys and or money to the hospital and meet us there and welcome the riders. In July the American legion rides had their Christmas in July run where they rode from the American Legion Post 1 building to the Portland Shriners Hospital and brought toys and donated $2000.00 to the children The Motor Escort was proud to ride with them for this event.

This year has been very trying due to injuries and the unit. I think we should apply for the AMA unit of the year. There has been some attempt of jesting toward Motor Escort, but I assure you the Motor Escort is the Official Escort for the Potentate and proud to be designated as such.

Again thanks for a great month.

It’s 2015 and what great weather Oregon is having. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the member of the Motor escort for being the UNIT OF THE YEAR! The unit has shown it has members that pull together and get the job done. The Cobra’s next outing will be January, 31 2015 in Salem at the fairgrounds the event is the Salem roadster show.

Remember to buy your ticket and support the shrine center, see a member of the Motor escort to get your ticket there 25.00 @ and only 3500 are being sold and they are going fast. We are very fortunate to have several new members to our unit; I want to welcome them to a great unit.

Happy holidays from the Motor Escort Unit
Greetings fellow Nobles it’s December again, time for Christmas, New Years and festive occasions. I want to wish each and every one of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

We had the ABATE run December 06, 2014, and it was a very good run. The numbers were down a little, but since the city of Portland was going to reduce the number of rider to 250, 2500 riders showed up and were very generous with their giving for the Hospital.

On December 14, there is going to be a ride from the VFW post #1 at 122nd to the Shrine Hospital to bring more toys to the children.

The Car raffle is off to a great start the tickets this year are $25.00 each, but we are only selling 3500 ticket, so the chances a very good.

I want to take this time to congratulate the newly elected Potentate and Divan. I’m looking forward to great leadership for the next year. There are some great fund raisers coming up this next year and I’m personally looking forward to the fellowship and raising monies for the Temple.

Here we are October, Haunted House time. We’re had our Food Caravan on Saturday, October 18, 2014, and I want to welcome Hillah back with us again. I’m looking forward to seeing all the Nobles and Ladies. This should be a great time and it’s for a great cause (the children in the hospital). It’s not going to be long and we’ll be having Chief Rabban night, November. 8, 2014, and raffling the Cobra away. All of you who have purchased tickets, thank you, and for those of you have procrastinated please buy your tickets right away. The ABATE run is coming up on December 6.

For those of you that have motorcycles and want to have a great ride on a brisk December Saturday please come join us.
