August 2017

Attention all Greeters. August 17th starting at 8:30 am we have the 72nd Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament to run. This is major fundraiser and we need all of you there to help. There are plenty of things to do. You can plan on great weather so that is not a reason to stay away.

For all the rest of you Nobles out there if you haven’t signed up to play you better hurry before the field is full. Get your friends, neighbors, relatives, spouse and/or girlfriend to put a team together. This is a best ball tournament (scramble) so you don’t have to be a great golfer to enjoy the day. A great lunch will be catered by the Desert Patrol after golf. Prizes are awarded and there is a raffle. All this is only $90 a person. If you have been meaning to show someone what the Shrine is all about this is a great place to do it. If you can’t put a team together sign up anyway we will get you on a team.

If you need a sign-up sheet or have a question about the tournament - there are flyers in this issue of the Oasis, or call the Shrine office or me at 503 708-4872.

he next thing on our agenda is the Al Kader family picnic at Oaks Park. Greeters should plan to be there by 10:00 am in orange shirt, black pants or shorts. We have our normal duties of greeting and checking everybody in.

Looking ahead Oktoberfest is September 14 – 17th. Mark your calendars.

July 2017

At last I have my Internet back so here it comes. Our next scheduled meeting will be July 31, 2017 at the Shrine Center at 3 pm. This meeting will be to finalize everything for the 72nd Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament. Any and all nobles and their ladies that are involved in the tournament are welcome and encouraged to attend. In case anyone has forgotten the tournament is August 17th at the Oregon City Golf Course. Registration begins at 8:30 am with a shotgun start at 9:30 am. Coffee and doughnuts are available when you check in. You can also purchase your mulligans and raffle tickets at that time. All Greeters should plan to be on hand for the tournament. Keep a loockout for players. If someone does not have a team not to worry we will put them on a team. This is a fun tournament and everybody has a great time so don’t miss out.

Parades are still going on and if you want to go to one you will be welcome and there is always room on the people mover for you. Just be sure to wear your fez.

On Saturday July 22nd it is Shrine Night at the Pickles game in Lents. Be sure to wear your fez when you go. All net proceeds go to the Transportation Fund.

July 15th is the Shiners Cup Race at the Willamette Speedway in Lebanon. Wear your fez for free admittance.

We have our regular Greeters duties at the Al Kader picnic August 27th at Oaks Park. Dress is orange shirt and long or short pants and fez. Plan to be there by 10 am.

We always have room for more members and the dues are low and the meetings are short which is a combination that’s hard to beat.

You can contact me at donslezak@gmail.com or 503 708-4872.

April 2017

The next scheduled meeting for the Greeters will be April 3, 2017 at the Shrine Center. It will be at 7 pm. There will not be a potluck with the ladies beforehand.

Hopefully this will get to you before the event. We have duties welcoming everyone to the Potentates Ball on April 1, 2017. This is not an April fool’s joke. We are serious. As many of you as possible are needed. There will also be two march-ins.

The dress is formal, white shirt, tie and blazer. You need to be there by 5 p.m... Reservations are required if you are planning to stay for dinner.

The annual Al Kader golf tournament will be our main topic of discussion at our meeting. As you know this is our only fundraiser and last year it was very successful for the club. Plan on attending this meeting so we can make this year’s tournament even better. Bring your ideas and suggestions. We can use as much help as we can get.

Some of the changes for this year is the Desert Patrol will fix lunch instead of Buster’s. Also since Nike is out of the golf equipment business we need to find a source for golf balls. If you know of one come to the meeting so we can get balls ordered.

All Nobles should be on the lookout for sponsors for the Golf Tournament. This is not only a good way to raise money for your club or unit but also gets people interested in playing in the Tournament. If you need forms or more information let me know or call the Shrine Office.

One of our members, who shall remain nameless, received the most Improved Golfer Award for 2016 from the Mountain View Men’s Club. That just shows what hard work, diligence and playing 4 days a week can do for you.

New members are welcome anytime!

February 2016

Happy Groundhog Day!
Our January meeting was iced out. Discretion was the better part of valor. As Norm Griffin pointed out he used to bounce but now he breaks. It seems to take longer to heal from a break than soreness. So the installation of officers and our regular meeting will be February 1, 2016. I am sure you can hardly wait. The social hour and potluck with the ladies will be at 6 as usual with our meeting at 7.

I came away from the training session loaded with everything you wanted to know about Al Kader but were afraid to ask. This will be presented at our meeting so that is the reason you need to attend. There are big things planned for 2016. This meeting will be informative and fun in addition to the installation of Officers so plan on attending. You also get to pay your dues if you haven’t already.

The Big Game Party is on the 7th. We don’t have any duties there but it is usually a fun time.

Remember that the parade season is starting. There is always room on the people mover for more and this is a great way to show the FEZ. If you can only attend one parade this season make it the Sheridan Parade June 13th. IS Tom Bland has requested all units and clubs to be there.

The next Greeter meeting is March 2nd at the Shrine Center. As usual we will have a potluck with the ladies at 6 and our meeting at 7.

If you are reading this it means you survived the deluge in February. Get ready for spring and everything that is beginning to happen.

Jim Dixon is home and recovering. Doug Carson is doing well. We all hope to see you at our next meeting.

We have a new Greeter. Von Bailey is joining our group. Welcome Von and we hope to see you at our next meeting.

All the intimate details of the training session will be covered. I hope this doesn’t discourage you from attending.

There is a stated meeting on March 9th. The big event of the month is on the 21st, which is the Potentates Ball. Our duties are to greet everybody at the door and do the march in. The uniform is formal. This is always a major function so we need as many as possible to be there.

Start preparing for the parade season and keep selling the car raffle tickets. Don’t forget to be on the lookout for new members both Shrine and Greeter.

The results from the golf meeting will be presented. We need to get started with lining up sponsors and as many players as possible.

Happy New Year!
We start out the year with the installation of officers for 2015 on Monday, January 5th. This is always exciting and you don’t want to miss it. The potluck and social hour with the Ladies is at 6 and with the meeting at 7.

Our first official duty for the New Year is to be on the door to greet everybody and to provide escort service for the Al Kader Installation on January 3, 2015. We need to be there by 5:00 PM or 1700 hours in our formal uniform.

The first stated meeting of the year is on January 12th. Be sure to attend and find out all the activities planned for 2015. We always have room for more members so if you are interested in joining us please give Don Slezak (503 254-4693) or Gary Scott (503 694-5015) or Jim Dixon (503 254-0119) a call at your earliest convenience.

Dues are due for 2015 so if you haven’t already paid them come to the meeting and take care of that minor detail.

December 2014

See, I told you November would be busy. Now get ready for December.

Our next meeting is December 1, 2014 at the Shrine Center. There is the potluck at 6 with the meeting at 7:00 PM. The Ladies are invited for the social hour and fine dining. Dues are due so if you haven’t already paid them it would be a great idea to come to the meeting and take care of this important detail.

The ABATE toy run is December 6th at the Hospital at 10:00 AM. Come out and help hand out pins and welcome the bikers who come bearing gifts.

The stated meeting is on the 8th with the annual election of officers for 2015. Be sure to come and vote for your favorite candidate.

The Christmas Party and Honors Social is December 13th. Doors open at 5:30 PM and the Greeters are at the door to welcome everybody. This is formal with blazer, white shirt and tie etc. If you haven’t made your reservation do it now.

The Shrine Center has a New Year’s Eve Party on the 31st of course. If you plan on going get your reservations in. The election of Officers for 2015 was as follows: President – Don Slezak, V. P. - Gary Scott, Secretary – Jim Dixon, Treasurer – Gary Scott, Chaplain – Earl Swenson, Quartermaster – Gary Scott/Don Slezak. Be sure to come to the meeting to meet this outstanding group.

Wayne Dennis just turned 81 but he is not the elder statesman of the group. That honor goes to Earl Swenson. Apparently being Chaplain helps.

November 2014

Cyclowns monthly meeting was held on October 6th at Chan's Restaurant in Milwaukie. 12 Nobles were in attendance including Noble Brian Wright who arrived in full clown makeup. He offered no explanation.

October was a very busy month for the Greeters. November is looking busy also.

Our election of officers is November 3rd. This will be our regular meeting and will be held at the Claim Jumper in Clackamas. This is a stag meeting. We have a table reserved. If you want to be involved in the Greeters plan on being there so you can get your pick of the offices. If you are not there you might not get your first choice. Of course the Greeters will pay. Plan on being here at 6:00 PM.

The Chief Rabban Night is November 8th. Doors open at 5:30 so plan on being at the Shrine Center by 5. The uniform is formal i.e. blazer, white shirt, tie etc. This is when we get the schedule for next year from the next Potentate.

Al Kader stated meeting is the 10th. The Winter Ceremonial is on the 22nd.

Be sure you turn in your car raffle tickets NOW, sold or unsold as the drawing will be during the Chief Rabban Night social.

Looking ahead to December we have the ABATE Toy run at the hospital on the 6th, Stated Meeting on the 8th and the Christmas Party and Honors Social on the 13th.

If you didn’t work or attend the Octoerfest you missed seeing the Al Kader food trailer. It was a great opportunity to show the fez and see us in action. Carol Pratt did an outstanding job of manning the grill and keeping the food following. Al Kader has a great location and will be there next year. If you missed it, it is your loss.
