We head our camels to that caravansarie (desert hotel) afar knowing that our Crab Feed was, again, a success. Over 350 people came and ate and frolicked with us. Attending were the 2017 Oregon Masonic leaders, Al Kader Shrine leaders, Shriners Hospital for Children (SHC) staff and members of other “tribes.” We must thank our ladies who worked so hard to make this a perfect way for the traveling OB caravan to begin our journey into 2017. We heard, at the CF, a visiting former SHC patient say, “Thank you, I was one.” We saw many thumbs-up signs, “way to go,” “...good time” and thank yours.

Bringing joy, relief and music to other “oases” lies in the OB’s future A trip to the oasis of Florida (Imperial) challenges us and some of us will even visit the “oasis” of Mexico (Potentates trip). Our fortune teller delights us as he sees us in parades, the food caravan, socials, the golf tournament, installations, ceremonials and more.

The Crab Feed (CF) is over and it was a frolicking feast of games and crab. It may be post-CF but it is pre-parade time and it is a chance for us to refresh ourselves for the journey to the children and others at our final destination, the oasis of Ab. It is also time, for some of us, to prepare to ride our caravan of music to far places, like Florida in July and Mexico in Sept. Our first meeting was led by our new head herder, Kevan. He started his meeting with a flag salute led by Wade Robley. This was followed by the introduction of officers and past Potentates and at the same time Joanne Bishop and Velna DeHut cleared the food table.

The “hat” was passed to benefit Ken Jubb and his “big wheel” at the CF, displaying the Brotherly generosity and compassion the OB “caravan” is known for. Our scribe told us that in 2017 he would like to try emailing and posting the tales of our business meetings. The “keeper of the gems” reported that ours were “glittering” for the start of 2017 and we should tell him of unknown 2017 events needing our funding. We then had fun discussing the fabled CF and Bud James’s desert golf plans.

We were honored by our monthly OB “camp fire” being “extinguished” by 2016 Potentates Rep. and fellow OB member, Mel DeHut.

The Oriental Band (OB) worked hard to help Al Kader Shrine in 2016. Much of the funds were due to you and others attending and “playing” at the OB Crab Feed.

Al Kader Shriners Oriental Band Unit - 2017

The Al Kader Travel Fund, A.K. Building Fund, Kids Christmas Party, IPads for Hospital patients, Association of Shrine OBs “Ladder of Smiles” (fund for Shriners Hospital patients), travel and parade participation and more have received funds, much earned at the 2016 Crab Feed. Most of the aid we were able to give was due to the generosity of attendees and their willingness to be a part of it.

Our OB caravan races to work at the Feed every year. It survives arid sands, wild animals, disease, starvation, thirst, heat and more to work so others may eat, play and fellowship.

An angelic white winged camel stands majestically atop a dune overlooking our rehearsals. It is that of our very special Lady, Virginia Jubb. She is watching over us (Virginia passed to her eternal reward shortly after last month’s article was submitted) to make sure we eat and behave. Virginia always assisted the other OB Ladies; she came to our dinners; she always supported Ralph and Ken in their OB efforts. She worked so hard for us. Our 2017 leader, Kevan Snyder, now heads this OB caravan, followed by Sahib Roger Bishop. They will guide us on our journey in 2017. Before we continue our journeys, we have a Second Sunday Jazz/Dance session to hold, the Installation on Jan. 7, the Crab Feed Jan. 28 and OB rehearsals (every Tues. night) to attend to.

“CAMEL CLAUS” and the WHITE CAMEL.

Lively Oriental Band children dance around the streets of Al Kader temple this month singing “Here comes ‘Camel Claus’, here comes ‘Camel Claus’, right down ‘Camel Claus’ Lane …” Meanwhile, their parents peruse the December Oasis. The youngsters lilting anticipation prevents them from glimpsing the white camel high on the hills.

Tan camels are called ”ships of the desert” and black camels summon or announce a Noble’s death – but what about that heraldic winged white camel?

The ancient temple of Al Kader is surrounded by giant sand dunes, visited mostly by the occasional lamb, snake or wild dog. Yet, when an OB Lady meets her trip to that unseen sacred temple, a spotless and winged white camel may mount those dunes for all to see as it “watches” over AK and the OB. Right now, atop those sandy AK hills, stands one solitary such white camel for we lost our devoted and loved OB Lady, Gail Gamble. Her white camel (positive outlook on life) will stand forever to inspire us all.

A tan camel’s level of musical talent, like that of many OB players, is fleeting. But the OB’s level of Shrine fun, fellowship and service is unsurpassed (at our Nov. 1 meeting we gave about $500 to the Children’s Christmas Party so they could buy toys for the kids).

Soon our OB musical caravan departs for the village of Ab. Leading us will be Kevin Snyder with Roger Bishop and Del Doellefeld following. Gillan Bradley tracks the gold and John Smith writes.

One of the OB caravan’s first events of 2017, the last Sat. in Jan., is the fabled CRAB FEED. Tickets for that famous feast of fun, fellowship and food are on sale now – ask an OBandsman for some or see page 23 of this issue of the Oasis.

Tales of the Sands

Eighteen dedicated Shrine “camels” answered the call of our President “El Supreme-o,” to brave the rains and meet in Al Kader Palace, as it was again time to feed upon the feast brought by Gillan and offer the names of a new set of leadership “camels” for 2017. – nominations were held. We talked of coming events and “sandy” OB travels. The “calendar camel” then heeded us not plan to cross the sands randomly as we have coming events the OB needs to attend, such as;

Second Sunday OB Jazz Nights at 7 (ever seen a “camel” dance?).Set up at 1:30 or 6:30, ask Roger).

Nov. 11 and 12 Fall Ceremonial and Wild Game (Camel) Dinner.

Nov. 14 – Stated Meeting – 5:30 dinner and 7:00 meeting – Election of new Al Kader “camel herders” for 2017.

Nov. 19 @ 5:30 OB Ron Gamble’s night (a.k.a. Chief Rabban Night) – he’ll discuss his plans, trip and award his raffle trip.

Last weekend in Jan. – OB Crab Feed – tickets on sale now – (ever seen a “camel “ with pinchers?) The Pres .reminded us to begin collecting NEW prizes only and give them to “camels” Bud or Roger (recall Soule donating his old stuff?).

He spoke of OLCC license renewals, cleaning of the OB storage room by Roger and Joanne, repayment for OB expenses and the OB pledging of 5 IPADs to the project of Lady Pat.

But, there is a “black camel” among Al Kader – Noble Clem Norton. Sick or distressed in the OB Family include Donna, Don W., Phil S., and his Lady, Virginia, Gary and others – remember them in your prayers and thoughts.

‘El Supreme-o’ dismissed we “camels” just before Art won the 50/50. We then dispersed into the night to bring our fellowship and fun to others.
