A main attraction at the 2017 Tillamook County Fair was Sir Loin, a handsome black angus steer, on exhibit across the beaten path from the 4-H Dorm, where Tillamook Shriners were selling raffle tickets on Sir Loin.

Following the most successful steer raffle ever, Melissa Bower, a patient at the Portland Shriners Hospital, drew the wining raffle ticket belonging to Mr. Don Fitch of Cloverdale. Melissa is granddaughter of Noble Jesse and Lady Jeanne Exton of Tillamook.

On hand for the steer raffle drawing were Al Kader Chief Rabban Art Hermanson and Lady Lynne, who attended the Tillamook County Fair for their third consecutive year. Present also were Al Kader Second Ceremonial Master Mark Phillips and Lady Deanna who rushed to Tillamook from the Astoria Regatta Parade for their second big shrine event of the day.

Proceeds from the annual Shrine Steer Raffle are used to purchase Tillamook cheese for the Portland Shriners Hospital.

There is no record of when the first Tillamook County Shrine Club steer raffle was held. However, a raffle ticket turned up dating it back to the mid-fifties, so we know it has been an annual event for over sixty years.

So, Tillamook Shriners can once again shout with glee. “ALL IS WELL IN GOD’S COUNTRY!”

Under the leadership of Noble President Ted Johnson, Tillamook County Shriners have embarked on soul searching to determine our shortcomings with regard to our responsibilities as Masons and Shriners, also to improve in these areas of responsibility.

Such was the case when we recalled The Shriners Creed and our Masonic obligations. We realized that for too many years we had neglected the widows of our fellow Nobles who heeded the beckoning of the Black Camel.

Inasmuch as Shrine widows are also Masonic widows, and insofar as Shrine Club President Ted Johnson is also Worshipful Master of Tillamook Lodge No. 57, A.F. & A.M., it was an easy task to coordinate a joint widow’s luncheon for our Shrine/Masonic widows.

The 1st Annual Widows Luncheon was held in Tillamook Elks Lodge on Wednesday, July 19th at 11:00 a.m. with sixteen in attendance.

Excitement filled the room as Illustrious Sir Ron Gamble and Lady Pam arrived to be warmly welcomed by District Deputy of the Grand Master of Masons in Oregon, Right Worshipful Brother Frank Jordan.

A sumptuous meal, a friendly atmosphere, the finest of fellowship and being honored by the presence of the Illustrious Potentate and a personal representative of the Most Worshipful Grand Master made glad the hearts of the Shrine/ Masonic widows of Tillamook County.

A little White Lie … A Great Reunion by Noble Carey Huckaba

Al Kader Old Timers remember when the doors of Al Kader Temple opened, if he was not already in there, Noble Roy Armentrout would soon make his entry. For many years Roy was the Recorder for Al Kader Temple, one of the many offices and positions he occupied for Al Kader over the years.

Roy’s daughter was planning a family reunion of sorts for her dad, but had concerns about getting the entire family and in-laws plus Roy at the same place at the same time.

One of Roy’s Shrine buddies was contacted and asked if he would allow his name to be used to invite Roy and family to a Shrine Club Luau.

This friend not only consented, but was happy to conjure up the invitation himself and send it to Roy and family.

It worked! Roy was there, his family was there and even a couple of Shrine Buddies from Tillamook crashed the luau. Roy was aglow with glee the entire afternoon.

So for everyone who remembers Roy Armentrout, here are a couple of photos from a great day in the life of a great Shriner.

The Nobles in God’s Country did it again! They set a new record! This time it was the 2017 EastWest Game Program Ad Campaign. Four Nobles canvassed Tillamook County and came up with 159 ads for the 2017 East West Game Program, collecting $11,405 with a few donations yet to come.

This is amazing when you consider that Tillamook County is among the 11 least populated of Oregon’s 31 counties. Thus there are 21 counties with greater populations than Tillamook County, yet little Tillamook County Shrine Club sells more program ads than any of the Shrine Clubs in counties with larger populations and more businesses and industry.

A tip of the Fez to Noble Ole Olsen, Noble Bill Dorsett, Noble Jesse Exton and Noble Robert Creech. Congratulations Nobles… Well done!

The Al Kader Shriners Legion of Honor North Coast Platoon continues to grow. Four new Legion of Honor members in the past two months.

So, with this we can again proclaim, “All is well in God’s Country.”

Since the raffle began, Tillamook Portland Freight Line has transported all that cheese to the Shriners Hospital in Portland without any charge.

Tillamook County Shrine Club was honored to have Al Kader Assistant Rabban Art Hermanson and Lady Lynne present for the steer raffle drawing on the final day of the fair. Lady Lynne drew the winning raffle ticket from the 3,800 raffle ticket stubs in the squirrel cage at the Shrine Steer Exhibit.

The winner of the 2016 Shrine Steer is Linette Gallagher of Tillamook.

Eighteen Tillamook County Shriners and their Ladies paid an official visit to the Portland Shriners Hospital on September 30th. After a two hour trip from Tillamook, a mighty fine lunch was served by the culinary staff, followed by a tour of the ultra modern hospital.

It was rewarding to see the expert care and personal attention the hospital staff and volunteers give to each patient. There are currently 37 Shrine Hospital patients from Tillamook County.

Tillamook County Shrine Club member Noble B.C. ‘Chuck’ Lamb and, Darlin, Chuck’s pride and joy, is a Shrine Hospital Therapy Dog. Chuck and Darlin spend at least one day each week caring for patients in their special way.

For sixty years, Tillamook County Shrine Club has raffled a steer on the evening of the last day of the Tillamook County Fair each year and some lucky person has become the proud owner of some mighty fine prime beef on the hoof.

Proceeds from the steer raffle are used to purchase Tillamook Cheese from Tillamook Creamery Association Farm Store for the Portland Shriners Hospital and Tillamook-Portland Freight Line has delivered all that cheese to the Shriners Hospital free of charge.

The 2015 steer raffle is a memorable one in that Illustrious Sir Tom Bland, accompanied by Al Kader First Lady Kathy and Shrine Lady Marie Carmen Badley, after touring the fair honored those present by drawing the winning raffle ticket from the 3,700 raffle tickets in the squirrel cage. The winner was Kevin and Debbie Queen of Tillamook.
