Noble Jerry "Jer" Wilson
Willamette Valley Legion of Honor
September 2017

Greetings from Commander Jer! Hope everyone had a safe and fun summer!

What a great parade season! It is such an honor to escort Illustrious Sir Ron in the ‘Vette. I am also honored to escort IS Ron in the Veterans Day Parade in Albany. It will be our last parade of the year… sniff, sniff. I have proudly represented our Platoon, met a lot of Veterans and talked about our Legion of Honor in all of the parade towns.

That brings us to Baker City. Wow! Let me say this… Nobles your Legion of Honor is on the Shriners map! Veterans know who we are. Even our Imperial Officers know that our Legion of Honor is working for you Noble Veterans. I had to tease Imperial High Priest & Prophet Jim Smith before the parade. I asked if he was a Veteran and he said “No, I am not.” I said “I see, that is why you are being escorted in a Camaro in the Parade.” My Potentate is a Veteran and is in my Platoon so that is why he gets to ride in the ‘Vette.” Imperial High Priest & Prophet said, “I didn’t see you at the PSNA Legion of Honor meeting.” I said “Sir, you got me.” Guess where I am going next year if I am elected Commander for 2018.

Please mark your calendars for the second Wednesday of each month, 11:30 at the Scottish Rite Center in Salem. (Sept 13, Oct 11, Nov 8 and Dec 13.) Also, please help Lady Melody with the head count for the luncheon. Please RSVP each month with an email or a phone call. Dave and Jan need the number attending on the Monday before the luncheons. They work hard for our meetings and we need to make their job as easy as we can.

Lastly, remember to bring a can of food for the upcoming Food Drive in October.

Bring a Noble or a Brother Mason to our meeting. Tell him about how it is an honor to be in the Legion of Honor, Willamette Valley Platoon!

Thank you for your service to God, Country, Shriners and Legion of Honor! Safe Travels. God Bless.

July 2017

Greetings from Commander “Jer!” I hope everyone had a safe and peaceful Memorial Day. Thank you Veterans!

Our Platoon had a great response at the Legion of Honor table at the Spring Ceremonial. I gave out 5 petitions - 3 to new Nobles, and 2 to senior Nobles that immediately filled out their petitions. One Noble is our Greeter, 94 year old Mr Earl Swenson, USMC Aug 1944. Wow! What a story this man has! I could listen to him for days. The other Noble is Mr John Tucker, Army/Air Force retired. Welcome to all our new Nobles!

The funny but true side to this is that when I became Commander, I made a challenge to our Platoon. Whoever turns in the most signed petitions will get a free Bird House made by me (any theme, and yes, even the Ducks) and their 2018 LOH Dues paid by me. The way it is looking, I may build myself a (Beavers) Bird House and have my 2018 LOH Dues paid by me. LOL!

Our Food Drive is going great! Our Guest Speakers have been great! Our Membership is going great! Our Platoon is Great!

We will be dark in July and August. No meetings for us those months. However, we will see ya’ all in Baker City the first weekend in August for the Shriner’s Football Game and Parade!

Wishing everyone a safe and fun summer!

Remember, Memorial Day and Flag Day is not just a day in May and June. It is every day!

Until we see each other again, “Peace be with you and may we all walk in Peace together!”

At our May meeting we had twenty seven Nobles & Ladies in attendance. There were two new faces at the meeting, Noble John Heston and Noble Dana Tawney. It was nice to have such a great turn out. Hope to see even more of you at our next meeting. Under New Business we voted to send $500 to the Ladies Fund for two tablets for patients at the Shrine Hospital.

Legion of Honor - The Brand

Our program was Chief Rabban Art Hermanson who talked about Marketing our Brand. Our next meeting is June 14 and our speaker will be Noble JB Dick who will report on his grandson that recently joined the Navy.

Greetings from the Legion of Honor! Our April meeting is after the Oasis deadline so nothing new to share right now. Thought you might like this though.

On Wednesday, March 8th we held our monthly luncheon meeting. There was a very good turnout with a few members that hadn’t been in attendance for a while. It was good to see you Nobles Art Thompson, Bill Sparks and Jerry Trebber. If you haven’t been to a Legion of Honor meeting for a while, I hope you will be able to join us again soon. Our speaker for the meeting was Noble Brian Williams who

Al Kader North Coast Platoon Legion of Honor Club

spoke about his service dog Reveille and the Veterans Program that he worked with to get her. Brian answered a lot of questions for us. Great presentation Brian and “woofs” to Reveille! Our next meeting will be April 12th, 11:30 a.m., at the Scottish Rite Center in Salem. Our speaker will be Chief Rabban Art Hermanson who will speak to us about promoting Shriners. I would like to make a trip to Medford for one of Hillah’s LOH meetings. It’s in the planning stage now. If anyone else is interested in going, please let me know. Also, Parades start up in April.

Escorting our IS Ron Gamble in the ‘Vette and representing the Legion of Honor. Fun times ahead!

January 18th we held our first meeting of the New Year. Inclement weather pushed our meeting back an extra week, just as it did in December.

We had a good turnout of members and ladies. We are always looking for more members to join our group. Frank Brewington was installed as Vice Commander. (At the December meeting, I was installed as Commander and Ernie Winterton was installed as Adjutant). Norman Griffin was initiated into our group. IS Ron Gamble was in attendance. He is also a member of our platoon due to his Army service. We discussed collecting one can of food per person at each meeting of the year. The food will be donated to the Food Caravan in October. For our program we had Dale Vrsalovich, Chief Rabban of Afifi Shrine, give a presentation about the Shriners Hospital. It was very informative. I always learn a little more each time I hear about the Hospital. Thank you Dale!

Our next luncheon meeting is Wed, Feb 8th, 11:30 am at Scottish Rite in Salem. Lunch is $10 per person.

January 2017

Another great summer of Parades and Fun has ended. Now it’s time to start thinking about the 2017 season. I know, where does the time go? ‘Another year older and deeper in debt.’ (Tennessee Ernie Ford). ‘Saint Peter don’t you take me yet, I owe my soul to the’ Al Kader Shriners Classic and Hot Rod Car Club. (I made that last part up).

I have an idea. Don’t laugh, save that for Lady Melody, LOL. Let’s start an Al Kader Shriners Classic and Hot Rod Car Club. I was told there were a lot of Classic Cars at the Albany Veterans Day Parade. Also, while attending the past Fall Ceremonial a few Divans asked me about the Car Club. I just shrugged my shoulders and told them I was going be the Commander of the Legion of Honor, Willamette Valley Platoon. Well, after some soul searching, why not start a Car Club too? If we want new Nobles to retain our current membership and to keep it growing we must remember our obligation. Ask and it shall be given. Never turn a Brother away.

Whatta ya say? I know if we put our heads together we will have the best looking Shriners Car Club west of the Mississippi. Shriners all over Oregon and Washington will be joining our club. Picture anew candidate telling you, the top line signer, that he has a cool car and all it does is sit in his garage.

Picture our parades with our garage candy in The Dalles, Baker City and Albany just to name a few. Picture us wearing our Fez and doing a Car Club Christmas Toy Run. We have worked hard to keep our garage candy nice in our garages. Now here is our chance to share our toy with others. Remember, Shriners have more fun!

We will plan a meeting place and time. We will update bylaws, draw up patches, elect officers and make up a billboard for our Ceremonials to attract new members. We can invite speakers to attend our meetings, like a speaker from World of Speed and whomever we want to speak about Cars.

Does this sound pretty cool?

Let me add, I do not want to spend a 100 degree day sitting in a parking lot and watch people put their finger prints on my garage candy. I want our car shows to be in parades while wearing our Fez.

These are a few ideas. No more sitting back and shrugging our shoulders.

Whatta ya say? Let’s make this happen!

Email me, call me or come to the Legion of Honor luncheon meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, 11:00 am at the Scottish Rite Center in Salem.
